The 98% keyboard format represents a specific key layout that is a compromise between a full-size and a compact keyboard. The main feature of this arrangement is the presence of a numeric keypad, which is often missing in smaller formats. However, it is physically narrower compared to a standard full-size keyboard. This space saving is achieved by removing the gaps between the main, alphanumeric section, the navigation keys, and the numeric keypad. Some navigation keys, such as "Insert" or "Scroll Lock", may be relocated or accessible via a function layer. As a result, the keyboard retains almost full functionality, including the numeric part, in a substantially smaller body. This layout is also referred to as "1800-compact".
