ContinueRoyal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands is one of the world's leading companies in the areas of electronics manufacturing, healthcare and lighting. Its advanced products, services and solutions are based on the company's philosophy: Sense and Simplicity.
Philips has its headquarters in the Netherlands, with offices in more than 60 countries worldwide and approximately 123,800 employees. The company Philips & Co was founded in 1891 by Gerard Philips and his father, Frederik, in Eindhoven.
The company initially concentrated on the production of carbon-filament lamps, and by the turn of the century was one of the largest producers in Europe. The development of new lighting technologies fueled further development and stability in society, and so in 1914 it established a research laboratory to study physical and chemical phenomena.
In 1918, Philips introuced the first medical X-ray to the market, and in 1925 it started its first experiments in the productions of televisions. In 1927 it began producing radios, and in 1932 they sold a million units. A year later, Philips produced its 100 millionth radio valve and started production of medical X-ray equipment in the United States.
In the mid-twentieth Philips introduced the first electric shavers to the market. At that time the company also contributed significantly to the development of the recording, transmission and reproduction of television pictures. In the seventies, its research into lighting techniques led to the creation of new energy-saving light bulbs. In 1984, Philips sold its 100 millionth TV set, and in 1995 its 300 millionth electric shaver!
The 90s were a time of significant change for Philips. The company entered into a major restructuring program to return it to a healthy footing. Today, Philips is a leader of the digital revolution, introducing premium products that help improve people's lives.
