On iPhone, it works without opening the app unless you have "authenticated access" enabled in the security section. In reality, on the iPhone, you have to click a window that opens when the NFC Yale Dot is loaded, then you have to open the Yale app anyway and authenticate with a code or FaceID, and then the unlock/lock happens.
