The backpack is unnecessarily large and heavy. Size recommended for 1st-3rd. class is nonsense, it would be fine for upperclassmen. The main problem is the weight though, I can't imagine it being handled by a first grader. If the child doesn't have to lift the backpack off the ground at all, then that's fine, the wheels are perfect, but that's about the only advantage.
