I don't know if it is a habit with compact tripods, but it is harder to handle when unfolding it, so I guess it can be done. But the supplied pad didn't fit any of the tech maybe it's explicitly just for the sony body, I wanted to use the small gimbal and the large DJI RS2 and the supplied pad didn't fit either. The whole head then needs to be unscrewed and only the legs put on. Either way, the head is not for making videos. Quite smooth in the horizontal direction, but smooth vertical movements are not possible.
