The ASUS HYPER M.2 x16 Gen 4 Card is a powerful expansion controller that allows you to connect up to 4 NVMe drives via PCIe 4.0. On paper, it looks great - huge capacity, speed and flexibility. But watch out! Before you buy this product, make sure your build can handle its PCIe link requirements.
Why is this important?
Each NVMe drive on this card needs 4 PCIe lines. If you fill all 4 slots, you need 16 lines just for the card. Add to that a graphics card (typically 16 lines) and other components. You can easily get to 44 lines, which most processors can't handle.
My experience
Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX X670E-F Gaming WiFi
Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D (max. 28 PCIe links)
Configuration: I already have 4 NVMe drives directly on the board + I wanted to add another 4 via ASUS HYPER M.2 x16.
Result? After buying it, I found out that the processor has only 28 lines. In order to make the card work, I would have to take lines off the graphics card, which means a noticeable drop in FPS in games. I practically blew my money on 3 NVMe drives (12 TB) and the controller itself. What to look out for before buying
Find out the number of PCIe lines of your CPU (e.g. Ryzen 9 has 28 lines).
Check the line layout on the motherboard - some slots share lines.
Count on the fact that the graphics card needs 16 lines for full performance.
Unless you have a HEDT platform (Threadripper, Intel Xeon), this card may be impractical for you. Verdict
The ASUS HYPER M.2 x16 Gen 4 Card is a great product for those who have plenty of PCIe lines. However, it is often unusable for mainstream desktop processors without compromise. Recommendation: Calculate your lines before you buy - save yourself money and nerves.
