Radecký
Field Marshal Radetzky is undoubtedly one of the most significant military strategists of the pre-modern era. He is best known for his victories over Napoleon in France and Germany, during which he served as chief of staff for the allied coalition. He also distinguished himself, albeit in his eighties, with victories over the revolution-infused Italians in 1848 and 1849, temporarily preventing both the unification of Italy and the weakening of the Habsburg monarchy's position on the political map of Europe.
However, in his masterfully constructed biography of Marshal Radetzky, Alan Sked does not focus solely on his command abilities. He provides an equally detailed analysis of his relationships and contacts with politicians and diplomats of the first half of the 19th century, whom he managed to win over to his military solutions, while at the same time respecting political decisions that often conflicted with his military plans. The author also notes Radetzky's ability to choose the right and loyal associates, without whom he would have been unable to push through his proposals for reforming the ossified Austrian army or his strategies for military campaigns. Yet, Sked's biography does not neglect Radetzky's private life, which at the beginning of his career hindered his progress and repeatedly limited his social ascent, primarily due to the financial demands and minor scandals of his wife.
